Gram-negative, nonencapsulated, nonspore-forming, comma-shaped rods. Motile.
Colonies on CSBA incubated in a microaerobic atmosphere at 37 ºC for 48 hours
are 0.75
-1.0 mm in diameter, circular, entire, low-convex, smooth, shiny, grey,
translucent, butyrous and easily emulsified. Microaerophilic. No growth at 25 or 42 ºC,
or in aerobic or anaerobic atmospheres. Grow
s in the presence of 1% (w/v) glycine, 64
mg/L cefoperazone, 4 mg/L metronidazole but not in the presence of 2% or 3.5% NaCl.
Three strains were isolated from rectal swabs collected from common seals (Phoca vitulina). A fourth strain was recovered from a
sample of small intestine taken from a harbour porpoise (
Phocoena phocoena). One isolate from northern elephant seals (Mirounga
angustirostris
) and one from human clinical sample.
Resistant to 30 μg/ml cephalothin and 30 μg/ml nalidixic acid.
