Gram-negative, spiral, 0.2-0.4 x 1.9-3.3 μm rods. Motile by a single polar flagellum.
Colonies on nutrient sheep-blood agar after 72-96 hours at 37 ºC incubation, are 1-2
mm in diameter, smooth, grey–green, flat with rough margins and slightly mucoid.
Alpha-hemolytic. Strictly microaerophilic. No growth in aerobic or anaerobic
conditions. Able to grow at 37-42 ºC, but not at 25 ºC.
No growth occurs in the presence of 1% (w/v) glycine and 2% (w/v) NaCl and only few
strains grow in the presence of 1% (w/v) bile.
Some strains reduce triphenyl tetrazolium chloride and grow on nutrient agar without
blood but not on MacConkey agar.
Isolated from the caecal contents of rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus). Most strains are resistant to nalidixic acid (30 μg) and
cephalothin (30 μg) by disk diffusion method.
