Gram-negative / Gram-variable, straight / slightly tapered and curved, motile rods, 0.6-
0.9 x 3.0-6.0 μm. Produce ellipsoidal / cylindrical, subterminal / paracentral
spores in
usually swollen sporangium.
Isolated after a 30-min 100 ºC heat treatment of the samples, on brain heart infusion
(BHI; Oxoid) supplemented with bacteriological agar no. 1 (Oxoid) and filter-sterilized
vitamin B12 (1 mg/l; Sigma).
Colonies are cream, opaque, slightly convex and round, with rough or spreading
transparent edges and with eggshell surface texture on TSA (4 days at 30 ºC). Motile
microcolonies may spread across the surface of the agar and rotate in a clockwise
direction; colony diameter is 1–2 mm. Aerobic growth. No anaerobic growth. Can
grow up to 50-55 ºC, optimum growth at 30-40 ºC. Grow in pH 5-6 to 10.5-11;
optimum pH 7.
Isolated from raw (dairy farm) and heat-treated milk (UHT). Isolated after 30 minutes and 100 ºC heat treatment of the samples.

from: adonitol, arabitol, dulcitol, erythritol, 2- or 5-ketogluconate, glycerol,  inositol, inulin, lyxose, rhamnose, sorbitol,  sorbose,
tagatose, xylitol & L-xylose.

Variable results for nitrate reduction, acid production for: N-acetylglucosamine, D-arabinose, galactose, beta-gentiobiose, melezitose,
salicin,  D- or L-fucose & gluconate.
