Phylum Firmicutes, Class Bacilli, Order Bacillales, Family Paenibacillaceae, Genus Paenibacillus, Paenibacillus contaminans Chou,
Lee, Lin, Chang, Arun, Young and Chen 2009.
Gram-variable, motile (peritrichous flagella) rods, 0.8–1.0 x 2.0–3.0 μm Produce
ellipsoidal; paracentral/subterminal spores in swollen sporangium.
Colonies on nutrient agar are colourless, semi-transparent,approximately 0.5–1.0
mm in diameter after 72 hours incubation at 30 ºC. Grow both aerobically and
anaerobically. Grow in 0-2% NaCl but not in 5% NaCl medium. Grow at 10-37 ºC, pH
Isolated from a contaminated laboratory plate. Resistant to sulfamethoxazole plus trimethoprim. Sensitive to ampicillin,
chloramphenicol, gentamicin, kanamycin, nalidixic acid, novobiocin, penicillin G, rifampicin, streptomycin and tetracycline.
