Phylum Proteobacteria, Class Betaproteobacteria, Order Burkholderiales, Family Alcaligenaceae, Genus Candidimonas,
Candidimonas nitroreducens Vaz-Moreira et al. 2011, type species of the genus.
Gram-negative coccobacilli, 0.50 µm. Non-motile.
Colonies are white, circular, 1 mm diameter, convex and rough on PCA after 48 h
incubation. Growth occurs at 15-40 ºC (optimally at 30 ºC), at pH 5-8 (optimally at pH
7) and in the presence of up to 3% (w/v) NaCl (optimally at 1% (w/v) NaCl). Aerobic,
growth is slow and weak in anaerobic conditions.
Isolated from sewage sludge compost.

Positive results for acid and alkaline phosphatase, catalase, esterase (C4), esterase
lipase (C8), leucine arylamidase, nitrate reduction, oxidase, valine arylamidase
Can assimilate: adipate, phenylacetate, itaconic acid, sodium acetate, lactic acid, 3-hydroxybenzoic acid, propionic acid, valeric acid,
2-ketogluconate, 3-hydroxybutyric acid, gluconate (weak) & malate (weak).
Negative results for arginine dihydrolase, cystine arylamidase, esculin hydrolysis, alpha-fucosidase, gelatinase, alpha- and
beta-galactosidase, beta-glucuronidase, alpha- and beta-glucosidase, N-acetyl-beta-glucosaminidase, H2S production, indole
production, lysine decarboxylase, lipase (C14), alpha-mannosidase, ornithine decarboxylase, tryptophan deaminase, trypsin,
alpha-chymotrypsin, urease, Voges-Proskauer test, acid production from glucose.
No assimilation of: D-glucose, L-arabinose, D-mannose, D-mannitol, N-acetylglucosamine, maltose, citrate, L-rhamnose, D-ribose,
inositol, sucrose, suberic acid, sodium malonate, L-alanine, 5-ketogluconate, glycogen, L-serine, salicin, melibiose, L-fucose,
D-sorbitol, capric acid, L-histidine, 4-hydroxybenzoic acid & L-proline.
