Phylum Actinobacteria, Class Actinobacteria, Subclass Actibacteridae, Order Actynomycetales, Suborder Actinomycinae, Family
Actinomycetaceae, Genus Actinomyces, Actinomyces hyovaginalis Collins, Stubbs, Hommez and Devriese 1993.
Gram-positive diptheroidal rods, arranged in clusters or V or Y forms; coccoid elements
Grown in Todd-Hewitt broth (Oxoid) supplemented with 5% horse serum at 37 ºC.
Facultative anaerobic. Colonies are flat with outrunning edges, especially after
anaerobic incubation on horse blood agar. Non-haemolytic.
Isolated from purulent lesions in pigs. Habitat is the porcine genital tract.
Isolated from purulent vaginal discharge and aborted fetuses.
