Actinomyces hyovaginalis Collins, Stubbs, Hommez and Devriese 1993.
Gram-positive diptheroidal rods, arranged in clusters or V or Y forms; coccoid elements
may occur.
Grown in Todd-Hewitt broth (Oxoid) supplemented with 5% horse serum at 37 ºC.
Facultative anaerobic. Colonies are flat with outrunning edges, especially after
anaerobic incubation on horse blood agar. Non-haemolytic.
Isolated from purulent lesions in pigs. Habitat is the porcine genital tract.
Isolated from purulent vaginal discharge and aborted fetuses.

Positive results for alkaline phosphatase, esculin hydrolysis, alpha-galactosidase,
beta-galactosidase, hippurate hydrolysis, leucine arylamidase, nitrate reduction,
Tween 80 hydrolysis, acid production from: adonitol, L-arabitol, L and D-arabinose, fructose, galactose, glucose, gluconate,
N-acetylglucosamine, D-lyxose, maltose, mannose, salicin, sucrose, turanose & D-xylose.

Negative results for arginine dihydrolase, catalase, beta-glucuronidase, gelatin hydrolysis, pyrazinamidase, pyrrolidonyl arylamidase,  
urease, acid production from: D-arabitol, dulcitol, gentibiose, inulin, melezitose, melibiose, raffinose, rhamnose, sorbitol & tagatose,
trehalose, L-xylose & xylitol.

Variable results for acid production from: cellobiose, inositol & lactose.
